Robin Gibb was determined to hold on to life, against all odds

Introduction:

New Delhi: Robin Gibb has expressed to doctors his unwavering determination to survive, declaring that he “wants to live no matter what.”

The Bee Gees legend, who has been battling colon and liver cancer, faced a critical setback after developing pneumonia and falling into a coma. Despite the dire prognosis, his wife, Dwina Murphy-Gibb, says he has remained a relentless fighter throughout his ordeal.

In an interview with The Sun, she revealed: “The doctors asked Robin whether he wanted them to exhaust all possible efforts to save his life—or if he believed there might come a time to let go. Robin responded with absolute resolve: ‘There will never be a time when enough is enough. I want to live, no matter what.'”

Robin Gibb astonished doctors earlier this week by emerging from a coma, and he is now able to communicate with his family—including his brother Barry and son Robert-John—while breathing with the assistance of a mask.

The Stayin’ Alive singer had previously undergone chemotherapy following a diagnosis of liver cancer and was believed to be in remission. However, his condition worsened earlier this year when he was diagnosed with a twisted colon—the same condition that claimed the life of his twin brother Maurice in 2003.

Robin’s condition became critical when his bowel perforated, leaving him with only a ten percent chance of survival.

His wife recounted: “I said, ‘If we just sit here and don’t allow Robin to have the operation, he’ll be gone within the hour.’ RJ said, ‘Dad’s going to make it—I just know it.’”

The surgical team proceeded, warning the family that Robin might not survive more than 20 minutes into the operation. “Those were the longest, most terrifying 20 minutes of my life,” she said. “I sat there, praying.”

Then, the doctors returned and gave a hopeful nod—he had made it through. Though they predicted he would remain on a ventilator for three days, Robin defied the odds once again and was breathing on his own within hours.

Following Robin Gibb’s diagnosis with pneumonia, his wife Dwina Murphy-Gibb, his brother Barry, and his son Robert-John maintained a constant vigil at his bedside. Although he has since regained consciousness, Dwina acknowledges that he is still on a difficult road to recovery.

“We’re taking it one day at a time,” she shared. “Robin has been gravely ill. Every time I visit him in the hospital, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude—just to see his eyes open and hear him speak is a gift.”
