The Life and Sad Ending of Robin Gibb - What Happened to ROBIN GIBB?

Introduction:

Robin Hugh Gibb, born on December 22, 1949, in the Isle of Man, United Kingdom, was one of the most iconic voices in pop music history. Best known as a member of the legendary pop group Bee Gees, Robin, alongside his brothers Barry and Maurice Gibb, helped shape the sound of an entire era. With their signature harmonies and timeless hits, the Bee Gees became one of the most successful music groups of all time.

Robin grew up in a musical family. His father, Hugh Gibb, was a drummer and bandleader, which naturally inspired the brothers’ love for music. Robin had three brothers — Barry, Maurice, and Andy — and one sister, Leslie. As a child, Robin was known for his mischievous personality and adventurous spirit, often getting into trouble. In 1955, Barry formed a rock and roll group called The Rattlesnakes, with Robin and Maurice as vocalists, along with their friends Paul and Kenny. Although the group disbanded in 1958, it marked the beginning of the brothers’ musical journey.

Later that year, the Gibb family moved to Australia. While living there, the three brothers formed a new band, The Bee Gees, and quickly gained popularity. Their first television appearance came in 1960 on Desmond Tester’s Strictly for Moderns. After achieving moderate success in Australia, the brothers returned to the UK in 1967 to pursue a larger audience.

During the late 1960s, the Bee Gees released a series of successful albums, including Horizontal (1968), Idea (1968), and Odessa (1969). They also toured extensively and even filmed a BBC television special. However, tensions arose within the group, leading Robin to briefly leave in 1969 to pursue a solo career. Though he found moderate success on his own, Robin rejoined the Bee Gees in 1970, and together, the brothers achieved phenomenal success.

By the mid-1970s, the Bee Gees had reinvented their sound, embracing R&B and disco. Their music captivated the disco generation, with chart-topping hits like Jive Talkin’ (1975), which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The Bee Gees dominated the music scene throughout the 1970s, but as disco began to fade in the 1980s, their popularity declined. During this period, Robin explored his solo career again, releasing albums such as How Old Are You and Secret Agent.

In 1987, the Bee Gees made a remarkable comeback with the album ESP, selling over three million copies worldwide. Their single You Win Again topped charts across multiple countries. Throughout the 1990s, they continued to enjoy success with albums like High Civilization (1991) and Still Waters (1997). Their final studio album, This Is Where I Came In, was released in 2001, followed by their last concert in 2002.

Beyond music, Robin’s personal life was complex. He married Molly Hullis in 1968, with whom he had two children, before their divorce in 1980. In 1985, he married author and artist Dwina Murphy, and they had one son together. Robin also fathered another child during an affair with his housekeeper, Claire Young.

Tragically, Robin’s life was cut short when he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in November 2011. The cancer spread to his liver, and despite battling the illness, his health rapidly declined. On May 20, 2012, Robin Gibb passed away in London at the age of 62.

Robin’s legacy lives on through his unforgettable music. With his distinctive voice and immense talent, he continues to inspire generations of artists and fans around the world. The world said goodbye to Robin Gibb, but the magic of the Bee Gees will never fade.
