A Son’s Love: Robin Gibb’s Final Moments Through RJ’s Eyes

Introduction:

Robin Gibb, one-third of the legendary Bee Gees, passed away in 2012 at the age of 62 after a long and brave battle with cancer. In his final moments, his family gathered close, surrounding him with love, peace, and the comforting presence of those who meant the most to him.

His son, Robin-John — known as RJ — shared a deeply emotional account of those final hours. “I cradled his head and held his right hand,” RJ recalled. “My mother held his left hand. I gave him a kiss, and we told him we loved him as we watched him go.” It was a quiet, intimate goodbye — full of dignity, pain, and love.

To RJ, his father wasn’t just a music icon; he was a best friend and creative partner. “We were colleagues. We shared the same sense of humor. I think about him every day. I miss him dearly. And I am so proud of him.”

Following in his father’s footsteps, RJ has become a performer himself and plans to tour the timeless music of the Bee Gees. But he carries no fear of comparison. “I’ve never thought I was living in his shadow. If anything, I’d say — what better shadow to live in? I just hope people will take the time to listen to my own work.”

Music was never forced upon him — it was simply part of life. Robin Gibb never pressured his son into the industry, but by giving RJ the chance to experience the studio and the stage, the love for music came naturally. “Eventually, we started working together,” RJ said.

One of their most meaningful collaborations was a classical composition created to honor the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking. Although Robin was too unwell to attend the Royal Albert Hall premiere, RJ brought a smile to his father’s face by sharing footage from the event. “He was so proud of the reception it got. Watching the performance brought joy to his eyes.”

Now a father himself, RJ is determined to keep his father’s memory alive for the next generation. He often plays Robin’s music and even old recordings where his father tells stories and anecdotes about his life. “I don’t avoid his voice — I welcome it. I listen to it all the time, not just for myself, but for my children too,” he said. “They never got to meet their grandfather. But Dad loved children, and he would’ve been so thrilled to know he had grandchildren.”

Through music, memories, and storytelling, Robin Gibb’s legacy lives on — not just in the world of fans, but in the hearts of his family. For RJ, it’s more than a career or inheritance; it’s a bond between father and son that will never be broken.
